Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

Sheikh Sultan bin Hamdan Al Nahyan, Advisor to the President of the UAE and Chairman of the Camel Racing Federation, participated in the late races of the 3rd Al Dhafra Camel Racing Festival. This event, hosted at the Al Dhafra Racetrack in Madinat Zayed, continues the celebration of one of the UAE’s longest-standing and respected traditional sports—camel racing. The festival symbolizes Emirati culture, heritage, and community pride.

Under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler’s Representative in Al Dhafra Region, the festival underscores the UAE’s commitment to preserving and promoting its national heritage through sports connecting current generations with ancestral traditions. The backing from leadership reflects the UAE’s efforts to reinforce national identity through continuing cultural practices.

During the evening program, 17 thrilling races occurred under the Haqayeq category, showcasing young camels’ speed and endurance. Spectators witnessed energetic competitions and remarkable displays as participants from across the nation showcased their best-bred camels and racing expertise. The event fostered an atmosphere of excitement, uniting camel owners, trainers, and viewers in a majestic celebration of sport and tradition.

The festival consists of a comprehensive schedule of 107 races divided into three primary categories—Haqayeq, Luqaya, and Eydha—representing various age brackets of camels to ensure equitable competition and excitement. Throughout the festival, 24 distinguished trophies will be awarded, with eight reserved for each category, motivating excellence among breeders while promoting fair competition within this highly valued Emirati sport.

Speaking during the event, Sheikh Sultan bin Hamdan Al Nahyan emphasized the significance of such festivals in safeguarding the UAE’s rich cultural heritage. He commended the commitment of camel owners and trainers dedicated to upholding the authenticity of this traditional sport while improving its standards. He expressed gratitude for the organizational efforts ensuring each festival edition surpasses the last, enhancing the sport’s popularity both locally and regionally.

The Al Dhafra Camel Racing Festival transcends being merely a sporting affair; it represents a celebration of unity, heritage, and pride. Participants from across the UAE come together, embodying the nation's shared appreciation for its traditions. The event's triumph reinforces the UAE’s international reputation for balancing modern advancement with cultural conservation. With ongoing support from the nation’s leadership, camel racing persists as a fundamental aspect of Emirati identity and a lasting symbol of the desert spirit.
