StubHub Stock Plummets 20% After Disappointing First Earnings Post-IPO

Post by : Bianca Haleem

StubHub’s initial earnings report since its IPO in September resulted in a significant decline in stock prices on Thursday, with shares dropping approximately 20% in after-hours trading. Investors reacted strongly to a much larger-than-anticipated quarterly loss, overshadowing the company's revenue gains and consistent demand for live events.

The ticket marketplace reported a loss of $4.27 per share, primarily due to a one-time $1.4 billion stock-based compensation cost related to its public offering. This pushed StubHub’s total net loss to an astounding $1.33 billion, a sharp increase from just $45.9 million a year prior.

On the other hand, revenue rose to $468.1 million, surpassing expectations of $452 million, and grew 8% year over year from $433.8 million.

StubHub also noted an 11% increase in gross merchandise sales, reaching $2.43 billion. The company highlighted that the same period last year had unusually high results due to the popularity of Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour. Excluding this influence, GMS showed an impressive 24% year-on-year growth, indicating a strong ongoing demand for concerts, sports, and live performances.

During an investor call, StubHub said it will refrain from providing guidance for the current quarter, citing variability in ticket-sale timing. The company intends to share its outlook for 2026 during its fourth-quarter results announcement.

Founded in 2000, StubHub competes with platforms like Vivid Seats, SeatGeek, and Live Nation, which owns Ticketmaster. Its long-anticipated listing was able to raise $800 million despite experiencing multiple delays influenced by market fluctuations.

The stock closed on Thursday at $18.82, roughly 20% below its IPO price of $23.50, as investors assess strong consumer interest against hefty IPO-related costs and the lack of immediate guidance.
