Sudan's RSF Backs U.S. Humanitarian Ceasefire Initiative

In a noteworthy development, Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have announced their acceptance of a humanitarian ceasefire proposal put forth by the United States alongside several Arab nations. This indicates a willingness to engage in discussions aimed at resolving the extended conflict with the Sudanese army.

Thursday's announcement by the RSF marks a rare beacon of hope during the two-and-a-half-year conflict, which has devastated Sudan, causing tens of thousands of deaths and displacing millions. The Sudanese army has yet to provide an official response, although sources indicate that significant military leaders are hesitant about the proposal.

The RSF stated, “We look forward to executing the agreement and initiating discussions about halting hostilities and the essential principles steering the political process in Sudan.”

The U.S. State Department confirmed its ongoing communication with both factions in order to advance the ceasefire initiative. A spokesperson emphasized, “We urge both parties to join the U.S.-led effort in achieving a humanitarian truce, considering the urgent need to alleviate the suffering of the Sudanese population.”

Increased Pressure for Resolution

This proposal, which has the support of the United States, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Egypt, suggests a three-month humanitarian ceasefire, followed by negotiations aimed at a lasting peace agreement. This comes as fighting escalates in Darfur, particularly after the RSF took control of El Fasher, a city struggling with famine in western Sudan.

Reports from witnesses reveal civilian casualties and kidnappings during and after the takeover, raising international alarm. In response to this situation, RSF leadership has called on soldiers to ensure the safety of civilians and has pledged to hold accountable those who commit violations.

The conflict began in April 2023 when tensions between the RSF and the Sudanese army—once allies—escalated due to disagreements on integrating forces into a unified command. This war has plunged Sudan into a severe humanitarian crisis, with millions facing displacement and famine.
