Suns Claim Narrow Victory Over Timberwolves 114-113 in NBA Cup Clash

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

The Phoenix Suns triumphed with a narrow 114-113 victory against the Minnesota Timberwolves in a gripping NBA Cup game this past Friday. This exhilarating win was marked by a remarkable comeback, as the Suns overturned an eight-point deficit within the final minute. Collin Gillespie emerged as the standout player, scoring a personal best of 20 points, including the decisive shot just 6.4 seconds before the buzzer. His composed finish capped off one of the most dramatic endings of the Suns’ season.

The Suns faced difficulties for a large part of the fourth quarter and appeared down and out when the Timberwolves extended their lead to 113-105 with 1:09 left. Nevertheless, Phoenix displayed resilience. Dillon Brooks contributed significantly with 22 points and nailing four three-pointers, while Mark Williams added 19 points and eight boards. With this victory, the Suns moved to 2-0 in Group A of the NBA Cup, maintaining a solid streak with nine wins from their last eleven matches.

The Timberwolves, on the other hand, would lament how the match unraveled at the end. Anthony Edwards turned in a stellar performance, scoring 41 points and sinking five threes. He singlehandedly managed to net 19 points in the third quarter, aiding his team in overcoming an 18-point halftime deficit. Julius Randle added 20 points, while Rudy Gobert offered support with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Unfortunately, the Timberwolves faltered under pressure in the final moments due to crucial mistakes.

Minnesota’s downfall began with three turnovers in the closing minute, two of which led to points for the Suns. Edwards, who had earlier shined throughout the game, faltered by missing two pivotal free throws with merely 12.7 seconds left. This opened the door for Phoenix, as Jordan Goodwin made significant contributions by scoring a three-pointer and a layup from the Timberwolves’ turnovers, trimming the lead to one point at 113-112.

The defining moment came next. With the arena on edge and time dwindling, Gillespie seized control with a game-winning shot to put the Suns ahead by one. Minnesota had a chance to respond, but couldn't convert in the dying seconds, and their late-game errors robbed them of a hard-fought victory.

Despite Edwards’ impressive Cup performances, tallying 37, 30, and 41 points across three games, his late-game free throw misses proved difficult for his team to recover from. Minnesota currently holds a 2-1 record in Group A, with one final Cup game against Oklahoma City yet to play.

For the Suns, they achieved this win despite a challenging night for Devin Booker, who managed only 16 points on 4-of-18 shooting and fouled out late. Although he provided 10 assists, he recorded nine turnovers, which added to the team’s season-high tally of 27 turnovers. Minnesota capitalized on these errors, converting them into 29 points that maintained their lead through much of the second half.

Nonetheless, when it mattered most, it was Minnesota who lost their grip on the game. A sequence of turnovers, missed free throws, and defensive errors allowed the Suns to mount their comeback. Phoenix is set to face Sacramento and Oklahoma City in their upcoming Cup matches as they strive to remain undefeated in Group A.

This exhilarating win highlighted that even amidst a night of blunders, tenacity and decisive execution can dramatically alter the outcome. Gillespie’s final shot ensured that Phoenix secured a memorable victory, enhancing their momentum in the NBA Cup.
