Suns Secure 111-102 Win Against Spurs, Brooks Shines with 25 Points

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

The Phoenix Suns achieved a solid 111-102 victory against the San Antonio Spurs on Sunday, marking their third consecutive win. Dillon Brooks was the standout player with 25 points, successfully hitting four of the team’s 14 three-pointers. Devin Booker also contributed significantly with 24 points, supporting the Suns in securing their 10th win out of 12 outings this season.

Jordan Goodwin made an impactful debut, recording his first double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds. He filled in for Ryan Dunn, who was sidelined due to a sprained wrist. Mark Williams also provided a valuable contribution with 14 points and 11 rebounds, showcasing his prowess on both offense and defense. Off the bench, Collin Gillespie added 15 points and six assists, particularly important during the third and fourth quarters.

For the Spurs, De’Aaron Fox led the scoring with 26 points, while Devin Vassell chipped in with 17. Julian Champagnie recorded a double-double, providing 10 points and 12 rebounds. This loss ended San Antonio’s three-game winning streak, as they had been thriving since Victor Wembanyama's calf injury on November 14 against Golden State. However, the consistency of the Suns proved to be too challenging for them to overcome.

The match started off competitively, with the Spurs enjoying an 11-point lead late in the first half, but the Suns regained composure in the third quarter. Booker and Williams combined for 21 points in a pivotal 37-point quarter that swung the momentum in Phoenix’s favor, bringing the score to 86-80. A three-pointer from Gillespie early in the final quarter widened the gap to 96-84. Brooks then hit a crucial jumper, securing a lead that the Spurs could not narrow down to less than eight points in the final minutes.

Phoenix maintained a shooting percentage of 44.3% and made 14 of 38 attempts from beyond the arc. The Suns have consistently hit at least 10 threes in every game this season, showing offensive firepower, particularly with 14 made threes in their last three games. This victory also signals a season sweep over the Spurs, who had previously lost to Phoenix 130-118 earlier this season, halting their five-game winning streak.

Despite the defeat, the Spurs kept the game competitive, converting 17 free throws and grabbing a 50-43 edge in rebounds. Key plays included a strong start from Goodwin, who notched eight of the Suns’ initial 29 points, countering San Antonio's advances effectively. Luke Kornet, Champagnie, and Jeremy Sochan executed impressive dunks early on, putting the Spurs ahead 45-34. Vassell’s three-pointer stretched their lead to 62-52, but the Suns swiftly countered with an 11-0 run to take control.

The match underscored Phoenix’s effective scoring and collaborative play. Brooks, Booker, Williams, and Goodwin all contributed significantly, showcasing the team’s roster depth. Their ability to maintain a steady lead and execute in crunch time was integral to their success over a determined Spurs team.

This victory is yet another demonstration of the Suns’ strong performances, boosting their confidence as they strive to secure a prominent position in the Western Conference. Their blend of sharp shooting, strong defense, and teamwork keeps them competitive among the league's top teams this season.
