Japan's Takaichi Receives Trump's Support Amidst Rising Taiwan-China Tensions

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

On November 25, 2025, Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi expressed that she received an encouraging message from former U.S. President Donald Trump during their initial phone conversation following a recent diplomatic clash with China. Trump assured her, “Call me anytime,” reinforcing Japan’s position amid escalating regional tensions.

This dialogue occurred after Takaichi addressed the Japanese parliament earlier this month, suggesting that any hypothetical Chinese aggression towards Taiwan might provoke a military response from Japan. The remarks sparked outrage in China, which regards Taiwan as a part of its territory and has not dismissed the possibility of using military force to assert control over the island. In reaction, China applied travel restrictions against Japan.

Located approximately 100 kilometers from Japan, Taiwan firmly rejects China’s claims, asserting that its future is a decision solely for its citizens. This volatile context places Japan, a crucial ally to the U.S., in a challenging situation as regional tensions continue to rise.

Post-conversation, Takaichi briefed the press about Trump’s emphasis on their strong friendship and the encouragement for her to make regular contact. During the talk, Trump also updated her on the latest U.S.-China relations and his call with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Xi reportedly asserted that Taiwan’s “return to China” is a pivotal aspect of China’s global vision. While Trump has not publicly commented on Taiwan regarding his conversation with Xi, it remains a significant concern.

The U.S. government has not publicly addressed the nature of the call between Trump and Takaichi. Meanwhile, the Japanese administration is focused on sustaining stable relations with both the U.S. and China, stressing that peaceful interactions are crucial for both regional and global stability.

Encouraged by the U.S., Japan has ramped up its military capabilities in recent years to confront China’s increasing assertiveness. Recently, the nation declared plans to station a medium-range missile unit on Yonaguni Island, situated near Taiwan. This strategy has drawn criticism from Beijing, which views it as provocative, intensifying the existing tensions. Japan also deployed fighter jets in response to the detection of a Chinese drone near Yonaguni.

Despite the escalated friction, Japan has demonstrated a willingness to engage in dialogue with China to ameliorate the situation. Not too long ago, Japan’s vice foreign minister sat down with China’s ambassador in Tokyo to discuss prevailing issues. However, China dismissed any notion of arranging a meeting between Takaichi and Chinese Premier Li Qiang during the last G20 summit.

Since taking office last month, Takaichi has been characterized as a strong nationalist enjoying significant public support in Japan. Her firm outlook regarding Taiwan-China matters signals potential ongoing difficulties in Japan-China relations.

Concerns linger in Japan regarding Trump’s stance on Taiwan, as some officials express worry that he might prioritize trade agreements with China over Taiwan’s security. Analysts suggest this could embolden China to undertake more assertive actions in the region.

Japan remains vigilant, carefully managing its alliance with the U.S. while navigating its complex relationship with China, and stands firmly in support of Taiwan’s right to self-determination.

This ongoing diplomatic tale underscores the delicate and intricate dynamics of East Asia, where influential nations and regional actors grapple with security, diplomacy, and economic interests.
