Supreme Court Rejects WFI's Appeal Concerning Vinesh Phogat

Supreme Court Rejects WFI's Appeal Concerning Vinesh Phogat

Post by : Shakul

The Supreme Court has turned down the Wrestling Federation of India’s appeal challenging a Delhi High Court ruling that permitted wrestler Vinesh Phogat to take part in the selection trials for the 2026 Asian Games. This decision effectively wraps up the legal proceedings following the conclusion of the selection trials.

Justices P.S. Narasimha and Aravind Kumar noted that the appeal had become irrelevant since the selection process had concluded. Given that the trials were completed and Phogat had participated, the court found no viable reason to further examine the issue.

This legal conflict arose when the Delhi High Court allowed Vinesh Phogat to compete in the Asian Games trials, despite objections from the Wrestling Federation of India. The federation later sought the Supreme Court’s intervention regarding the eligibility ruling.

The apex court clarified that dismissing the appeal should not be seen as endorsing the Delhi High Court's critical remarks about the federation. The judges emphasized that their decision was based on the irrelevance of the case since the trials had already concluded.

Although Vinesh Phogat participated in the trials as instructed by the High Court, she did not manage to qualify after losing in the competition. Thus, the central question raised by the appeal had been eclipsed by the outcomes of the trials.

This ruling underscores the principle that courts typically refrain from adjudicating on disputes that no longer present a live controversy or practical implications. Legal analysts observed that with the trials over and results finalized, the appeal diminished in significance from a judicial standpoint.

The matter had garnered significant attention in India’s sports community due to ongoing discussions surrounding wrestling governance and athlete inclusion in national selection processes. While this court ruling resolves a key legal dispute, the conversations about transparency and governance in Indian wrestling are expected to persist.
