Escalating hostilities between the United States and Iran were evident on Friday as both nations exchanged fire in the Strait of Hormuz, intensifying worries about the viability of ceasefire discussions and overall regional security.
A recent CIA assessment indicated that Iran could endure a US naval blockade for an extended period without succumbing to significant economic strain. An unnamed US official familiar with the findings asserted that Washington's leverage over Tehran is increasingly limited, in spite of rising military and economic pressures.
As engagements heated up in the Gulf, the situation became tenser than it had been since the ceasefire on April 7. Reports noted some of the most serious confrontations near the strategic Strait of Hormuz this week, a critical route for global oil shipments.
On the same day, the United Arab Emirates experienced renewed attacks as their air defense systems intercepted two ballistic missiles alongside three drones reportedly launched from Iran, resulting in moderate injuries for three individuals.
Concurrently, the United States is awaiting a response from Iran regarding a proposal that aims for a formal resolution of the conflict, which would precede extensive discussions about Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio expects a reply from Tehran soon, sharing with reporters in Rome that clarity on the proposition was hoped for by Friday.
However, Iran's foreign ministry stated it is still evaluating the proposal, with no formal response provided yet.
Confrontations Persist in the Strait of Hormuz
Iran's semi-official Fars news agency reported renewed clashes between Iranian and US forces on Friday. Another Iranian news outlet, Tasnim, noted that while the situation had temporarily calmed, further military encounters could not be ruled out.
The US military reported targeting two Iran-affiliated vessels attempting to dock in an Iranian port. Officials stated that a US fighter jet successfully struck the ships' smokestacks, compelling them to withdraw.
Since the conflict escalated following US-Israeli airstrikes on February 28, Iran has imposed severe restrictions on non-Iranian shipping within the Strait of Hormuz while the US enforced a blockade on Iranian vessels last month.
These ongoing tensions have impacted the global oil markets, pushing Brent crude prices above $101 per barrel due to fears over potential supply disruptions, even though prices are still over 6 percent lower for the week.
US President Donald Trump remarked on Thursday that despite the recent clashes, the ceasefire continues to hold for the most part.
Iran Accuses the US of Undermining Ceasefire
Iran has charged the US with jeopardizing diplomatic endeavors by conducting military operations while discussions are ongoing.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi criticized the US for favoring military action when diplomatic solutions are on the table.
Moreover, Iran's Mehr news agency reported that a US Navy attack on an Iranian commercial vessel late Thursday resulted in the death of one crew member, injuring 10 others, with four still unaccounted for.
Rubio also expressed concern about European nations not sufficiently supporting efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to international shipping, warning that allowing any nation control over a global waterway could lead to dangerous precedents.
US Intensifies Sanctions on Iran
In conjunction with military and diplomatic efforts, the US has enacted new sanctions targeting Iran's military-industrial sector.
The US Treasury announced sanctions against ten individuals and entities, including some based in China and Hong Kong, accused of aiding Iran in acquiring components for weaponry and materials used in the manufacture of Shahed drones.
Furthermore, US officials cautioned that additional sanctions may target foreign companies, airlines, and financial institutions linked to Iranian trade networks, particularly those associated with independent oil refineries in China.
These sanctions were unveiled just ahead of President Trump’s anticipated visit to China for discussions with President Xi Jinping.
