On Tuesday night, Syracuse earned a narrow victory at home, triumphing over Monmouth with a score of 78-73. The match was high-energy, displaying rapid gameplay and critical shots from both sides. Entering with a robust 3-0 record, Syracuse exuded confidence while Monmouth fought hard until the very end.
Donnie Freeman led Syracuse with an impressive 18 points, executing key shots that maintained his team’s edge during pivotal moments. Nate Kingz contributed 15 points, showcasing his strength on the court, while Naithan George rounded out the performance with 12 points, nine assists, and six rebounds, orchestrating the game’s tempo and sustaining Syracuse's rhythm.
J.J. Starling added another 11 points, including a critical three-pointer just when Monmouth was mounting a comeback. Overall, Syracuse displayed notable shooting skills, achieving 50% accuracy from the field, with an improved 60.9% in the second half, establishing a lead as substantial as 14 points.
Despite their struggles this season, Monmouth came out fighting. Justin Ray delivered a career-high performance, netting 25 points and sinking four crucial three-pointers, keeping his team competitive with precise shooting and sharp decision-making.
Stefanos Spartalis also shone in the game, achieving a personal best of 18 points, while Jack Collins added 11 points, complemented by six rebounds and five assists, marking significant contributions for Monmouth. Their strong synergy capitalized on Syracuse’s difficulties at the charity stripe, particularly in the second half where Syracuse missed a glaring 11 free throws.
Notably, Monmouth's leading scorer, Jason Rivera-Torres, faced challenges with foul issues, scoring just seven points. However, he executed a remarkable block that transitioned into a fast break, allowing Justin Ray to strike another three-pointer, closing the gap to 67-60.
Syracuse quickly responded as Starling hit a critical three-pointer to restore an 11-point lead. Yet, Monmouth persisted; with under two minutes to play, Collins managed to seize a rebound from Freeman, scoring a jump shot that narrowed the deficit to 73-67. The game's intensity heightened as the tension built in the final moments.
Starling only converted one of his two free throws, and Rivera-Torres made a layup, further tightening the lead. Collins then propelled Monmouth closer with a pivotal three-pointer, reducing Syracuse's lead to just 74-72 with only 36 seconds remaining. The crowd's anxiety mirrored Monmouth’s potential to pull off a comeback.
Freeman composedly converted two free throws for Syracuse to maintain their upper hand. After Rivera-Torres scored one free throw, narrowing it to 76-73, Bryce Zephir of Syracuse missed both free throw attempts, giving Monmouth a final opportunity. However, Rivera-Torres's last three-point attempt sailed off-target, sealing Syracuse's victory.
The game was fiercely contested from its inception, with Monmouth even leading 22-18 before Syracuse launched a decisive 16-4 run to end the first half ahead. The second half was characterized by fast breaks, highlighted by back-to-back dunks orchestrated by George.
Ultimately, Syracuse upheld their unbeaten record at 4-0, demonstrating excellent teamwork and composure in crucial moments. Monmouth, conversely, garnered respect for their valiant effort and standout individual performances.
