Taiwan Launches Investigation into Ex-TSMC Executive's Move to Intel

Taiwan Launches Investigation into Ex-TSMC Executive's Move to Intel

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Taiwan has initiated a probe into whether a former senior executive from TSMC transmitted confidential semiconductor technology to Intel following his transition to the U.S. chip manufacturer this year. The case is capturing attention in the global semiconductor arena, where competition for cutting-edge manufacturing processes intensifies.

Reports have identified the executive as Wei-Jen Lo, instrumental in TSMC’s advancements in 5-nanometre, 3-nanometre, and 2-nanometre technologies. He departed from TSMC after over 20 years and joined Intel in October, amid allegations regarding the potential transfer of sensitive data prior to his exit, which has triggered this review.

The High Prosecutors Office in Taiwan has acknowledged the situation and has begun a preliminary investigation, though no official complaints or charges are present yet. Officials are investigating to determine if any unauthorized technology transfer occurred and whether national security regulations might apply.

Economy Minister Kung Ming-hsin stated on Wednesday that the government is taking the issue seriously, highlighting that semiconductor expertise is deemed a critical strategic asset. He reiterated that authorities will work closely with prosecutors to evaluate the adequacy of existing advanced technology safeguards.

TSMC has not provided comments on the situation. Intel has also refrained from making any public statements regarding Lo’s hiring. A source acquainted with the matter revealed that Lo is currently engaged at Intel and reports directly to CEO Lip-Bu Tan.

Lo has a 21-year tenure at TSMC, where he previously supervised research and advanced technology development. Before his time at TSMC, he spent 18 years at Intel in diverse leadership positions, such as director of technology development and manager of the Santa Clara facility.

The government has pledged to monitor the situation closely to assess any possible ramifications for Taiwan’s semiconductor sector or its international client relationships. The review is in its foundational stages as investigators compile relevant information.
