In a disturbing instance of retributive justice, the Taliban conducted a public execution in eastern Afghanistan, compelling a 13-year-old boy to shoot a man convicted of killing over a dozen family members. This shocking event unfolded last week in Khost province, attracting approximately 80,000 onlookers, as reported.
The condemned individual, named Mangal, was found guilty alongside two accomplices for the brutal murder of 13 relatives of the young boy, including both women and children. The Taliban's Supreme Court stated that the execution adhered to Qisas, a Sharia-based law of retributive justice akin to the principle of “an eye for an eye.” Authorities indicated that the victim’s family could have opted for forgiveness, which would have spared Mangal’s life, but they chose the death penalty instead.
The Taliban’s Supreme Court confirmed via social media that the execution occurred at the sports stadium after the family denied clemency. Though spectators were reportedly not permitted to enter with mobile phones, videos captured from outside showcased tens of thousands of men gathered to witness the grim event.
This incident marks at least the 11th public execution since the Taliban regained power in 2021, reinstating strict Sharia punishments. Crimes such as murder, adultery, and theft have led to brutal consequences, including executions, amputations, and public flogging, under the Taliban's interpretation of Islamic law.
Since seizing control of Afghanistan, the Taliban has imposed severe restrictions on women and girls, triggering widespread international outcry. Female students are prohibited from attending secondary schools and universities, and job opportunities for women have drastically diminished, exacerbating the country’s human rights crisis.
The execution in Khost has evoked widespread global condemnation, with the United Nations calling the act “inhuman and cruel” and underscoring the grave ramifications of Taliban governance on Afghan society.
