In a remarkable display of talent, 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi took the cricketing world by storm on Friday during India A's match in the Rising Stars Asia Cup at West End Park International Cricket Stadium. The batting wonder logged a record-equalling T20 century in just 32 balls, leaving both the UAE bowlers and the commentators in awe. His fearless demeanor and steadiness in such high-pressure conditions garnered him admiration from fans and analysts alike.
Suryavanshi's performance was nothing short of spectacular, as he amassed 144 runs off a mere 42 balls, striking 15 sixes and 11 fours that propelled India A to 297/4. The team won by 148 runs, but it was Suryavanshi’s innings that truly shone. A commentator quipped that the young talent was delivering essential lessons on composure and focus, highlighting not just his cricketing prowess but also his mature approach to the game.
Earlier, Suryavanshi had politely declined requests for selfies to concentrate fully. This choice proved beneficial, as he emphasized the significance of maintaining focus during the innings break. “Fans come to support us. I don’t feel pressure. Once you’re on the pitch, the outside noise disappears,” he shared. His clarity and calmness were noteworthy for someone so young.
He also acknowledged his father's pivotal role in fostering his discipline. “I owe much to my father for instilling discipline in me. He was strict during my childhood, and now I see his influence reflected in my game — I stay undistracted,” he remarked. Expressing gratitude for his cricketing journey, Suryavanshi reflected on his evolution from his early playing days to this extraordinary achievement.
With this innings, Suryavanshi tied with Rishabh Pant as the joint-second-fastest Indian to score a T20 hundred, achieving it in just 32 balls. Only Urvil Patel and Abhishek Sharma have recorded faster centuries for India, while the global record belongs to Sahil Chauhan, who scored a century in 27 balls. At just 14 years and 232 days, he became the youngest player to achieve a century for any men's national team. Remarkably, he also holds the unique feat of two T20 centuries in 35 balls or less, having previously scored a 35-ball hundred in the IPL.
The only moment of peril in Suryavanshi's innings came when UAE captain Alishan Sharafu dropped a straightforward catch, a chance he turned into an incredible opportunity. He edged close to breaking several T20 records, briefly challenging Tilak Varma’s Indian record and even Chris Gayle’s worldwide landmark before concluding his innings at 144. His performance showcased tremendous talent, focus, and psychological strength.
As Suryavanshi exited the field, a wave of recognition from the India A team celebrated the rise of cricket's newest star. Beyond his extraordinary batting, his calm demeanor and thoughtful nature caught the attention of commentators and fans alike, marking him not only as a record-breaking athlete but also a young sage of maturity and understanding in the sport.
