PTPA Moves Towards Settlement with Tennis Australia Regarding Player Welfare

PTPA Moves Towards Settlement with Tennis Australia Regarding Player Welfare

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

The Professional Tennis Players’ Association (PTPA), co-founded by Novak Djokovic, is reportedly on the verge of settling a lawsuit with Tennis Australia focused on player welfare and tournament conditions. The PTPA initiated a class-action suit in March 2025 against multiple governing bodies, including the ATP and WTA, alleging anti-competitive practices and unsustainable player schedules.

In September 2025, the case was expanded to include the organisers of the Grand Slam events, notably the Australian Open. While the ATP dismissed the claims as meritless and the WTA deemed them “baseless,” the PTPA continues to advocate for better pay and scheduling reforms.

Recently, the PTPA's legal team informed the United States Southern District Court in New York that fruitful discussions with Tennis Australia are ongoing. Both parties have indicated that a settlement is likely soon, requesting the court to pause proceedings concerning Tennis Australia while this agreement is finalized. Tennis Australia signaled its intention to withdraw from litigation if the court approves the settlement.

This lawsuit raises significant concerns regarding compensation and the ranking system that mandates player participation in certain tournaments. The PTPA has also criticized the strenuous 11-month season, harsh playing conditions, and varying tennis balls used at different competitions, which have led to injuries among players.

Notably, although Djokovic, a renowned 24-time Grand Slam winner, helped establish the PTPA, he is not among the 12 current or former players involved in the lawsuit. While elite players can earn substantial prize money, many lower-ranked contenders find it difficult to meet their costs related to coaching, travel, and accommodation. Players risk losing ranking points for not competing in mandatory tournaments.

With the Australian Open set to begin in Melbourne on January 18, 2026, this prospective settlement could help Tennis Australia settle existing legal issues and refocus on organizing the event while implementing measures supporting player welfare.
