In a challenging Citrus Bowl matchup, Texas coach Steve Sarkisian faced uncertainty as his team entered the game without nine key players due to injuries and transfers. Yet, essential contributions from Christian Carter and Kaliq Lockett propelled No. 14 Texas to a 41-27 victory over No. 18 Michigan on Wednesday.
Arch Manning was the standout player, showcasing his talents with an impressive performance that secured the Longhorns’ 10th win of the season. He amassed 221 passing yards, throwing for two touchdowns, including a precise 30-yard strike to Lockett, elevated to a greater role due to injury challenges. Manning also rushed for 155 yards and scored two rushing touchdowns, executing two vital fourth-down conversions, one of which facilitated a touchdown run by Carter. Carter stepped into a leading role after Texas lost its top three running backs and made his presence felt with 105 rushing yards on 20 attempts.
Coach Sarkisian acknowledged his team's resilience, stating, “We played without nine starters, but that created new opportunities. That’s the culture we have here.”
The Longhorns, now 10-3, rebounded strongly after missing the College Football Playoffs, reflecting the potential they exhibited as the preseason No. 1 team in the AP poll.
Manning's defining moment came with a spectacular 60-yard touchdown run late in the game, extending Texas's lead to 38-27, marking a pivotal moment in the match. This effort earned him MVP honors for the Citrus Bowl, drawing parallels to his uncle Peyton Manning's memorable Citrus Bowl performance in 1997.
On the flip side, Michigan faced significant turmoil leading up to the bowl, having seen former coach Sherrone Moore fired amid scandal and subsequently arrested. The program currently faces NCAA probation with penalties expected to reach $30 million. New coach Kyle Whittingham was present at the Citrus Bowl, beginning his journey with the team.
Interim coach Biff Poggi, enduring his first loss at the helm, praised his players' efforts and expressed faith in Whittingham’s leadership going forward.
Michigan, now holding a 9-4 record, fought valiantly, despite the absence of key defensive players. Freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood kept them competitive with 199 passing yards, two touchdowns, and a rushing score. However, late interceptions by Texas's Ty’Anthony Smith proved detrimental to Michigan's chances of a comeback.
On the ground, Bryson Kuzdzal led Michigan with 82 rushing yards on 20 carries, effectively converting several fourth-down scenarios to sustain drives.
Freshman receiver Clark also made significant contributions for Texas, exceeding his usual reception averages in this critical matchup.
The game featured a total of 21 penalties between both teams, notably including a crucial blindside block penalty against Michigan near Texas's 10-yard line, leading to a turnover and shifting momentum toward the Longhorns.
