Texas shocked Texas A&M on Friday night, clinching a 27-17 victory that put an end to the Aggies' perfect season, thanks to two crucial late-game touchdowns from Arch Manning. The game remained competitive until Manning struck with a 29-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Wingo in the third quarter. A decisive 35-yard run in the fourth quarter capped off the victory, igniting the home crowd.
With this win, Texas improved to 9-3, reigniting their hopes for a playoff chance. Initially ranked first at the beginning of the season, they faced a dip in form midseason, but have now achieved three wins against top-10 rivals. Coach Steve Sarkisian pointed out that their challenging schedule, which included an opening matchup against Ohio State, could bolster their playoff contention.
Conversely, Texas A&M entered the game undefeated at 11-0, needing a win to secure a spot in the SEC championship game for the first time since joining the conference in 2012. However, the Aggies faltered in the second half, struggling to recover after quarterback Marcel Reed threw consecutive interceptions, despite earlier being a Heisman hopeful.
A&M held a 10-3 edge at halftime, but Texas surged ahead with 17 unanswered points. Although A&M narrowed the score to 20-17, Manning's critical third-down run dashed hopes of another comeback. He finished the game completing nine of his last twelve passes for 151 yards, distributing the ball effectively to six receivers.
Texas also showcased a long-awaited running game, with Quintrevion Wiser achieving a season-high 155 rushing yards. The Aggies' offense faltered significantly after Reed suffered a twisted ankle early in the game.
Both teams are now poised for the College Football Playoff rankings due on December 7. Texas is eyeing its bowl game, asserting its place among the top twelve teams, while A&M, despite this setback, is still projected to enter the playoff, although this loss will remain a tough memory in their rivalry.
