In an effort to attract more tourists during the busy holiday season, Thailand has lifted its long-standing restrictions on afternoon alcohol sales. The ban, in place for decades, prohibited the sale of alcoholic beverages from 14:00 to 17:00 but has now been suspended for a six-month trial period aimed at revitalizing the country's tourism-dependent economy.
With the new regulations, shops, restaurants, and licensed venues can sell liquor from 11:00 AM to midnight. Authorities intend to monitor the effects of this 180-day relaxation on both tourism and public conduct.
Originally imposed in 1972 to prevent government employees from drinking during work hours, this prohibition has frustrated many international visitors eager to explore Thailand's vibrant nightlife, beautiful beaches, and renowned party scenes. The policy shift coincides with the upcoming Christmas and New Year holidays, two peak travel times.
In the past, violations of the afternoon ban could incur fines of up to 10,000 baht (£235; $313), a regulation that has often been inconvenient for locals and visitors alike. By removing this restriction, the government aspires to enhance Thailand's image as a welcoming tourist destination and aid businesses in recovering from years of political unrest.
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, who assumed office in September, has made the revival of tourism a key priority. Deputy Prime Minister Sophon Saram remarked that previous concerns about government workers sneaking drinks have become obsolete in today's environment, emphasizing faith in modern workplace discipline.
Thailand has consistently ranked among Asia’s top alcohol-consuming nations, as highlighted by the World Health Organisation. Local favorites like Chang and Singha beers are popular among both residents and tourists.
Tourism is central to Thailand's economy, and officials anticipate that relaxing alcohol sale hours will lead to longer stays and increased spending in hospitality and nightlife sectors. A review will determine if these changes become permanent following the trial phase.
