Strengthening Defence Cooperation: Thailand and Vietnam's Commitment to Regional Peace

Post by : Shakul

During a high-level visit to Vietnam, Thailand and Vietnam have renewed their commitment to bolstering defence and security collaboration. Meetings held in Hanoi highlighted the increasing trust and shared vision between the two nations, aimed at ensuring peace and stability within the ASEAN region.

On June 8, Thailand’s Minister of Defence, Lieutenant General Adul Bunthamcharoen, alongside senior military leaders, engaged in discussions with Vietnam’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence, General Phan Van Giang. This dialogue exemplified the evolving relationship fostered under their comprehensive strategic partnership.

Both countries acknowledged the significant advancements in military cooperation over recent years. The talks encompassed various topics such as high-level exchanges, military training programs, intelligence sharing, and improved collaboration among armed forces. Maritime security emerged as a critical area of focus, with an emphasis on joint efforts in humanitarian aid, disaster response, and combating transnational crimes.

The defence ministries also examined strategies to tackle emerging security issues. Key themes for future collaboration included cybersecurity, defence industry partnerships, military technology growth, and innovation, with officials agreeing that closer coordination would enhance their capabilities in addressing modern security threats.

The promotion of the 2+2 cooperation mechanism involving both countries' foreign and defence ministers was another crucial topic discussed. Thailand expressed its willingness to support this initiative, viewing it as a valuable platform for enhancing strategic discussions and bilateral security relations.

Additionally, Thailand extended an invitation to Vietnam for the upcoming ASEAN–Republic of Korea Defence Industry Cooperation Conference and THAIDEF-EX 2026, demonstrating a mutual commitment to fostering regional collaboration, defence innovation, and stronger relationships among ASEAN members.

Officials noted that these discussions significantly complement the summit between leaders, showcasing a collective commitment to enhance mutual trust, reinforce security cooperation across diverse sectors, and foster sustainable development throughout Southeast Asia.
