Tharoor Champions Selection of Vaibhav Suryavanshi for Team India

Post by : Meena Hassan

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has advocated for the inclusion of 14-year-old cricket sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi in the Indian national team, urging the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to take notice. Tharoor praised Suryavanshi's impressive track record in domestic cricket, asserting that the young athlete’s talent merits immediate elevation to the national stage.

Suryavanshi's remarkable performance in the 2025 domestic season has garnered attention, having shattered numerous records. His record-setting feat of scoring the fastest 150 in List A cricket history eclipses the previous record held by AB de Villiers, with a breathtaking knock of 190 runs off just 84 balls, including 15 sixes that showcased his exceptional talent.

In a significant public statement, Tharoor likened Suryavanshi to cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar, who debuted at the age of 16. He emphasized that with a talent like Suryavanshi's, it is essential for head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar to expedite his selection, stating, "The last time we saw someone as gifted at this age, it was Tendulkar, and his journey is well-known to us all."

Suryavanshi is part of Bihar's historic achievement in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy, where the team accomplished a world record by scoring 574 runs for just six wickets. His astounding performance, alongside captain Sakibul Gani and wicketkeeper Ayush Loharuka, propelled Bihar to this unprecedented total.

Captain Gani scored an impressive 128 runs off merely 40 balls, marking the fastest hundred by an Indian in List A history. Ayush Loharuka complemented this with a swift 116 runs from 56 balls, together creating an exhilarating display of modern cricket.

The extraordinary achievements of these young cricket talents have sparked discussions about their rightful place in the national setup. The cricket community is rallying for the BCCI to swiftly acknowledge Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s remarkable journey with a spot in the national team.

As cricket in India evolves, Suryavanshi’s rapid ascent serves as an inspiration and a glimpse into the promising future the sport holds with its youngest stars.
