Guinea-Bissau Endures Another Political Coup in Turbulent History

Guinea-Bissau Endures Another Political Coup in Turbulent History

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

Guinea-Bissau, located in West Africa, has once more found itself engulfed in political chaos. On November 26, 2025, military officials claimed they had ousted President Umaro Sissoco Embalo, coinciding with the day prior to the announcement of presidential election results. The junta, referring to themselves as "The High Military Command for the Restoration of Order," reflects the country's enduring struggles with coups and governance.

This nation has grappled with political instability since gaining independence from Portugal in 1974. A pattern of coups, attempted overthrows, and political killings has dominated its landscape.

Chronology of Coups and Political Unrest:

November 1980 – Initial Coup: Prime Minister João Bernardo Vieira overthrew President Luís Cabral without bloodshed. Following this, several military officials faced execution or detention for subsequent coup attempts.

June 1998 – Collapse and Civil Conflict: A military rebellion that failed led to civil war ignited by Vieira's dismissal of Brigadier-General Ansumane Mane.

May 1999 – Vieira Deposed: General Mane compelled Vieira to resign after an extended conflict.

September 2003 – Yala Deposed: President Kumba Yala faced military action, resulting in a bloodless coup with an interim leadership until Vieira's return in 2005.

March 2009 – Vieira Killed: After enduring numerous coup attempts, Vieira was assassinated by troops allegedly loyal to rival General Batista Tagme Na Waie.

April 2012 – Military Takeover: Soldiers apprehended the interim president and candidates, seizing control ahead of final election results.

February 2022 – Botched Coup Attempt: An attack occurred on the presidential palace; while President Embalo survived, suspicions of drug trafficking lingered.

December 2023 – Coup Attempt: Embalo dissolved parliament, alleging a conspiracy; critics accused him of consolidating power amid unrest.

October 2025 – Foiled Scheme: Military personnel arrested officers suspected of undermining constitutional order.

November 2025 – Recent Coup: Military officials removed President Embalo, casting doubt on the nation’s political stability.

The recurring coups in Guinea-Bissau exemplify persistent issues such as weak democratic institutions, military influence, and drug trafficking challenges. Each transition of power disrupts governance, economic stability, and the lives of its citizens.

Experts have expressed particular concern regarding the November 2025 coup, as it coincided with an important election period. The current climate could erode public confidence in the electoral process and hinder progress towards stable governance.

Despite international pleas for a shift back to civilian rule, historical patterns exhibit that military interventions often dominate Guinea-Bissau's political scene, sometimes resulting in extended instability. Watchers are keen to observe if transitional authorities can stabilize the nation and organize credible elections soon.

Amid this turmoil, everyday life for the people of Guinea-Bissau deteriorates, marked by curfews, business closures, and growing uncertainty. The ongoing cycle of coups highlights the urgent requirement for institutional reforms and fortified democratic protections to avert further crises.
