A devastating fire erupted in a high-rise apartment building in Tai Po, a northern suburb of Hong Kong, on Wednesday, claiming the lives of at least 36 individuals and prompting the evacuation of hundreds. By Thursday morning, rescuers were still working to find 279 residents who were missing.
Authorities reported that the fire originated from external scaffolding of a 32-storey structure, rapidly spreading to adjacent buildings due to flammable materials like bamboo and construction netting. The windy conditions exacerbated the situation, resulting in fierce flames and thick smoke, hindering rescue efforts.
The complex houses eight buildings and around 2,000 apartments, accommodating nearly 4,800 residents, many of whom are elderly. Hundreds were relocated to temporary shelters, with 29 individuals still in hospitals. Fire services indicated that high temperatures and falling debris hampered rescue operations.
Police have arrested three men on suspicion of manslaughter linked to the fire. Investigations are underway to assess if the external wall materials adhered to fire safety regulations, as highly flammable foam sheeting discovered at the site may have exacerbated the spread.
Tragically, a 37-year-old firefighter lost his life while addressing the blaze, and another required treatment for heat exhaustion. More than 200 fire trucks and 100 ambulances were dispatched for fire control and to help affected residents.
Hong Kong’s Chief Executive John Lee asserted that disaster relief efforts would be prioritized, although the upcoming Legislative Council elections scheduled for December 7 might be impacted. Chinese President Xi Jinping conveyed his condolences to the victims' families, calling for measures to reduce casualties.
The incident raises significant safety concerns regarding the use of bamboo scaffolding in Hong Kong's construction sector, as the government revealed plans earlier this year to phase it out in public projects due to associated risks.
This fire is considered the deadliest in Hong Kong for many years, reminiscent of the November 1996 tragedy when 41 people perished in a fire at a commercial building in Kowloon. Authorities continue their search for missing persons and are providing aid to those affected by this disaster.
