In a powerful display, the Oklahoma City Thunder triumphed 122-95 against the Portland Trail Blazers on Sunday, marking their ninth consecutive victory. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was exceptional, contributing 37 points, along with seven assists and five rebounds, playing a crucial role in the team’s success.
This matchup revived memories of their previous encounter on November 5 in Portland, where the Blazers scheduled a singular loss for the Thunder this season. However, Oklahoma City wasted no time asserting their dominance right from the start, highlighted by an electrifying performance from Gilgeous-Alexander. The star’s early steal on the second possession and a stellar step-back jumper propelled his team into an early lead that they would never relinquish.
By the end of the first quarter, Gilgeous-Alexander had netted 17 points, finishing six of seven on field goals. His fast start, coupled with two steals and an assist, allowed Oklahoma City to build a formidable 21-point lead. The Blazers found it difficult to recover, going scoreless on four attempts in the final two and a half minutes of the period, while the Thunder capped off a 12-point run, exploiting five turnovers from Portland.
Oklahoma City sustained their momentum in the ensuing quarters. The Blazers struggled to get within 16 points for the remainder of the game, as the Thunder pushed their advantage to as much as 36 points. Ajay Mitchell emerged off the bench, tallying 20 points with an impeccable field-goal percentage, complementing the Thunder's overall shooting success of 52.3%. Isaiah Joe contributed another 10 points, and each of the 12 players utilized scored at least five. Isaiah Hartenstein excelled with 15 rebounds, showcasing his effectiveness under the boards.
Entering the fourth quarter with a commanding 28-point advantage, both Gilgeous-Alexander and Luguentz Dort sat out, given the game was firmly in control. With this impressive win, the Thunder improved to 8-0 at home, securing their 17th triumph in just 18 games this season, illustrating a robust beginning to their campaign.
On the other hand, the Blazers faced significant offensive hurdles, shooting a mere 37% from the field and struggling with a 25.5% success rate from beyond the arc. Jerami Grant managed to score 21 points for Portland, while Deni Avdija recorded 11 points despite missing 12 of his 16 shots. This latest defeat marked the Blazers’ fifth loss in six games, underscoring their difficulties in matching the Thunder’s tempo and dynamism.
The Thunder’s win underscores not only their cohesive teamwork and shooting precision but also highlights how vital Gilgeous-Alexander is for Oklahoma City. With significant inputs from bench contributors like Mitchell, the Thunder continue to showcase their status as one of the league’s elite teams this season.
