Tiger Woods, the illustrious 15-time major champion, has disclosed that the recovery process following his latest back surgery is progressing more slowly than anticipated, casting doubt over his potential return to competitive golf. As he prepares to celebrate his 50th birthday this month, Woods has undergone a disc replacement procedure, marking his seventh significant back surgery in recent times.
During the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas, Woods shared insights about his rehabilitation journey. Although he has been given the green light to engage in chipping and putting, he remains uncertain regarding his timeline for returning to tournament play. “It’s not moving along as quickly as I would prefer,” he stated, underlining the necessity for patience and commitment in his recovery.
Woods has faced several obstacles in recent years, including serious injuries sustained in a car accident in 2021. He made his comeback at the 2022 Masters but ended up in 47th place. Last September, he underwent another surgery on his back, and shortly thereafter, an Achilles tendon injury further complicated his recovery.
Gradually regaining flexibility, Woods has begun limited strength training and rotational exercises aimed at reinforcing his body safely without jeopardizing the healing disc. “Just allowing the disc to settle down,” he emphasized, reflecting on the need for a cautious recovery approach.
Despite rumors of a possible comeback at the Genesis Invitational in February in Los Angeles, Woods chose not to commit. “I don’t know… a disc replacement requires time. Thankfully, it’s not as lengthy as a fusion, but it still demands patience,” he explained.
Through these challenges, Woods' love for golf continues to shine. He expressed his yearning to return to the sport he cherishes. “I haven’t had the chance to play golf in ages. It has been a challenging year… my enthusiasm for just playing, I haven’t had that opportunity in a long time,” he remarked, affirming his resolve to navigate these hurdles and return to the greens.
