Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) unveiled on Friday that former New Zealand fast bowler Tim Southee has taken up the role of bowling coach for IPL 2026. This strategic appointment is expected to bolster KKR’s bowling division ahead of the upcoming tournament.
Having enjoyed a stellar 15-year career, Tim Southee is one of international cricket's top fast bowlers. Throughout his career, he participated in 107 Tests, 161 ODIs, and 126 T20 internationals for New Zealand, amassing 776 wickets. Celebrated for his swing and accuracy, Southee’s leadership was evident when he captained New Zealand across various formats, participating prominently in their 2019 ICC World Cup journey and their 2021 ICC World Test Championship title.
Southee is already familiar with the KKR environment, having played for the franchise during the IPL seasons of 2021, 2022, and 2023. His past experience with KKR's culture and players positions him well for his new position. After retiring from international cricket in 2025, he now embraces these coaching responsibilities.
KKR CEO Venky Mysore expressed enthusiasm over Southee joining the coaching lineup, highlighting his extensive background and leadership strengths. Mysore noted, “We are thrilled to bring Tim Southee back into the KKR family, this time in a coaching role. His technical skills and composed demeanor will be crucial in mentoring our younger bowlers and enhancing our bowling strategy ahead of IPL 2026.”
Feeling excited about his new role, Tim Southee shared, “KKR has always had a special place in my heart, and I am honored to return in this capacity. With a vibrant team culture and dedicated fans, I look forward to collaborating with the bowlers to achieve great results in IPL 2026.”
Southee’s new position is anticipated to significantly benefit KKR’s pace and spin bowlers. His rich international experience and tactical acumen are expected to guide and prepare the team effectively as they approach the 2026 season. KKR supporters can look forward to a competitive bowling lineup under the mentorship of one of cricket’s elite fast bowlers.
Tim Southee’s shift from international player to coach at KKR symbolizes a new chapter in his professional journey. His return reinforces KKR’s commitment to assembling a robust team, fostering young talent, and vying for the IPL 2026 championship title. Fans and players alike eagerly await the impact of his expertise on-field success.
