Tom Cruise Awarded Honorary Oscar for Cinematic Achievements

Tom Cruise Awarded Honorary Oscar for Cinematic Achievements

Post by : Meena Hassan

Director Alejandro González Iñárritu, who collaborated with Tom Cruise on a yet-to-be-titled film set to release next October, introduced the actor at a recent Academy gala. Iñárritu commended Cruise’s artistic talent, stating, "It is not how far he runs or how high he jumps. It's how precisely he decides to move, those tiny calibrations."

At 63, Cruise, a four-time Oscar nominee, was honored with an Honorary Oscar in recognition of his extensive contributions to the film industry, spanning from Risky Business to the Top Gun films and the Mission: Impossible series. The award also acknowledged his effort in championing cinema amid the rise of streaming platforms and social media.

During his acceptance speech, Cruise shared how films influenced his upbringing. "Suddenly the world was so much larger than the one that I knew," he remarked. He recounted hustling various jobs to afford tickets to movies, reinforcing his lifelong devotion to cinema: "I will always do everything I can to support this art form and to champion new voices, to protect what makes cinema powerful, hopefully without too many more broken bones." He humorously referenced injuring his ankle during a stunt in 2017.

"Making films is not what I do. It's who I am," Cruise stated.

The gala additionally recognized Dolly Parton with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award for her philanthropic efforts, including the establishment of a library that has distributed over 300 million books to children. Parton accepted her award via video.

Among other honorees were actor and choreographer Debbie Allen and production designer Wynn Thomas.
