Toronto Police are calling for assistance from the public to identify two suspects linked to an assault in the Church-Wellesley Village, a prominent community hub.
This incident took place shortly after midnight on Saturday, around 12:22 a.m., near Church Street and Alexander Street. Police report that the victim was approached while walking in the area, when a vehicle passed by and individuals inside shouted a homophobic slur.
The suspects then exited their vehicle, pursued the victim, and assaulted him before escaping in a dark-colored sedan. The details of the victim's condition have not been disclosed, but law enforcement is treating the case with urgency.
The investigation is under the purview of the Hate Crime Unit, reflecting the seriousness of the language used prior to the assault. Officials prioritize such cases due to their targeting of individuals based on identity.
Descriptions of the suspects have been made public: the first is a white male, about six feet tall and thin, wearing all-black attire including a black ski mask; the second, also a white male, is around five feet nine inches tall, similarly thin and wearing black clothing along with a ski mask.
Authorities encourage anyone who observed the incident or possesses relevant information, including video evidence, to report it. Even minimal details may aid in identifying the suspects and advancing the investigation.
In response to this incident, Member of Parliament for Toronto Centre, Evan Solomon, expressed his dismay at the attack. He insisted that violence or discrimination based on identity is unacceptable and highlighted the importance of ongoing efforts to ensure safety and respect for all communities.
The Church-Wellesley area, often called “The Village,” symbolizes support for the 2SLGBTQI+ community. This incident underscores the pressing need for heightened awareness and proactive measures against hate crimes.
The investigation is still active as police continue their efforts to locate the suspects.
