A tragic fire swept through the Wang Fuk Court residential complex in Tai Po, Hong Kong, claiming the lives of at least 146 individuals. This disaster started on November 26, originating from a minor fire on the first floor and rapidly transforming into a deadly blaze that engulfed eight high-rise buildings.
Inside the ravaged apartments, charred walls and shattered window frames narrate a tale of tragedy. Ash-covered debris and signs of daily life are scattered across the floors, with scorched furniture serving as poignant reminders of those lost. Rescue teams, in perilous conditions, are still searching through the remnants for missing residents.
A significant number of police and Disaster Victim Identification Unit members are present at the scene, equipped with safety gear and masks as they sift through the debris. So far, 146 bodies have been recovered, with 54 still unidentified and around 40 residents unaccounted for. Meanwhile, 14 individuals are critically injured and four more in serious condition at local hospitals.
Investigators are probing into the fire's cause, which preliminary reports suggest may have been ignited by a cigarette near the building's exterior. Concerns regarding construction practices have also been raised, notably regarding the use of flammable materials in renovations and bamboo scaffolding.
As the community mourns, many have gathered outside the damaged structures to pay their respects, leaving flowers, stuffed animals, and heartfelt messages. Expressions of sorrow and anger are evident, with signs stating, “Never Forget, Never Forgive,” encapsulating the community's pain and frustration.
Authorities have established a task force and made 11 arrests related to the incident, with three individuals facing manslaughter charges. Additionally, the Housing Department has assessed six of the eight blocks and reported no immediate structural threats.
The Wang Fuk Court inferno signifies one of the deadliest residential fires in recent memory, highlighting a community in mourning and raising urgent questions regarding safety measures and urban housing regulations.
