A Minnesota resident, ChongLy Thao, age 56, recounts a harrowing experience where immigration officers burst into his home with weapons drawn, handcuffed him, and forced him outside into the cold while he was only wearing shorts and Crocs.
Thao, also known as Scott, is a naturalized citizen who immigrated from Laos as a child. He has lived in the U.S. for many years.
The alarming incident transpired on Sunday evening during a raid targeting his neighborhood. Thao was at home when the officers broke down his door. Despite trying to get his ID, he wasn't permitted to dress appropriately before being escorted outside.
In the harsh cold, Thao wrapped a blanket around himself, but the handcuffs made it challenging to stay warm. Images from the scene quickly spread online, igniting public concern.
He described the episode as terrifying and degrading, fearing for his safety and questioning why he was targeted: “I kept asking myself, ‘Why me?’” He expressed anxiety about potentially being deported to Laos, where he has no remaining family.
After a brief period of detention, Thao was returned home the same day without any explanation or apology from the officers involved.
Authorities clarified that the raid was part of a larger operation focusing on identifying convicted criminals. Thao faced detention due to a delay in presenting his identification.
This incident has triggered significant outrage in the community, especially from civil rights advocates who condemned the raid as severe and unwarranted, emphasizing that U.S. citizens should not endure such treatment.
Thao’s family labeled the experience as traumatizing and embarrassing, raising vital questions about citizen rights amidst immigration enforcement actions.
The case has gained national attention, underscoring the crucial need for balanced enforcement and respect for civil rights in immigration-related operations.
