Trump Advocates for Federal AI Regulations to Enhance U.S. Competitiveness

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Former U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday highlighted the crucial need for a unified federal framework for artificial intelligence, cautioning that disparate state regulations could hinder innovation.

He stated on social media, “Excessive state regulation endangers this Growth Engine. We urgently need one Federal Standard rather than a fragmented approach across 50 states.” He expressed concern that, without cohesive guidelines, China could swiftly catch up in the global AI competition, an area he regards as vital for U.S. supremacy.

Trump indicated that introducing a federal standard might be achieved through a standalone legislation or as part of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), asserting, “Integrate it into the NDAA, or pursue a separate Bill, and America will remain unbeatable.”

This push for a unified regulatory standard comes as worries grow regarding AI's rapid advancement. Experts have warned about the technology's potential to disrupt elections, increase fraud, and impact jobs. Trump’s initiative reflects an effort to consolidate regulations, positioning the U.S. to uphold its technological edge while preventing regulatory disarray across states.

By advocating for a singular federal standard, Trump aims to establish a consistent regulatory landscape that fosters innovation and accelerates AI development within the U.S., ensuring it remains at the forefront of the global tech arena.
