Trump Claims Putin Desires Peace Amid Ukraine Negotiation Hurdles

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

US President Donald Trump stated on Wednesday that he believes Russian President Vladimir Putin wishes to conclude the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, despite stalled negotiations between Moscow and US officials.

Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff, alongside his son-in-law Jared Kushner, engaged in extensive dialogue at the Kremlin. Nevertheless, no significant progress was made to address Europe’s most severe crisis since World War II.

During a speech from the Oval Office, Trump characterized his interaction with Putin as "very good" and noted that the US delegation left with the impression that the Russian leader desires to find a resolution. “Their perception was notably strong that he wants to finalize a deal,” Trump remarked.

Witkoff and Kushner submitted an updated US proposal suggesting Ukraine concede portions of the eastern Donbas region and refrain from NATO membership. While Kyiv generally supported the idea, Moscow dismissed certain elements as unacceptable. Kremlin representatives asserted that Russia is still open to diplomatic discussions despite recent advances in military engagements.

Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov acknowledged that Russia's military accomplishments in eastern Ukraine have played a role in the current talks. Russian forces have made significant strides in the area, with President Putin indicating that Russia is prepared to continue its campaign to secure all disputed regions if Ukraine does not comply.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov reiterated Russia’s willingness to pursue negotiations, highlighting the ongoing potential for diplomacy. Meanwhile, NATO continues to bolster Ukraine’s defense, providing extensive arms support. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte emphasized that while peace discussions are heartening, the alliance must ensure Ukraine maintains its ability to defend against threats.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recognized the emerging possibility for peace but stressed that any negotiations must be complemented by international pressure on Russia. “The world is beginning to see a chance to resolve the conflict, and this current diplomatic activity needs to be accompanied by consistent pressure on Russia,” Zelensky stated.

These recent discussions have sparked concerns among European allies who fear that the US and Russia could strike agreements without adequately consulting Kyiv. European nations are actively working to adapt the US proposal to protect Ukraine from being coerced into concessions.

Despite the current diplomatic challenges, Trump conveys optimism about reaching an agreement, recalling a previous opportunity for peace discussed with President Zelensky earlier this year.

As the conflict persists, Russian troops continue their advances along active front lines, with ongoing skirmishes in pivotal areas like Pokrovsk. Observers indicate that the situation remains dynamic, with international diplomacy proving essential in determining the conflict’s trajectory.
