In a significant move, former President Donald Trump urged the Department of Justice on Friday to investigate foreign-owned meat packing companies, claiming they are pushing beef prices to unprecedented heights in the United States. This call to action arises amid increasing public distress over living costs and a series of electoral challenges for Republicans.
Trump specifically highlighted key meat producers, alleging that collusion, price manipulation, and fixing are responsible for escalating costs. “We will consistently safeguard our American ranchers,” he asserted, drawing attention to the fact that many of the largest meatpacking entities are largely owned by foreign interests, which poses risks to both food prices and the security of the nation’s supply chain.
Beef prices have surged sharply due to various factors, such as prolonged droughts, years of lower prices, and a decreasing U.S. cattle herd that is now at its smallest in decades. Furthermore, Trump’s tariffs on Brazil, a key beef exporter, have constrained imports while domestic demand remains strong, leading consumers to hesitate in switching to chicken or pork despite the rising costs.
The U.S. beef market is notably concentrated, with a handful of major companies controlling much of the supply. Among them, Brazil-based JBS is recognized as the leading beef producer in the U.S. and is also a major player in poultry and pork production. The company has previously been under legal scrutiny for price-fixing; in 2022, it resolved a $52.5 million lawsuit alongside Tyson Foods and others over alleged price manipulation, although it did not admit to any wrongdoing.
Senators Markwayne Mullin from Oklahoma, Cindy Hyde-Smith from Mississippi, and Tim Sheehy from Montana recently met with Trump to discuss the fluctuations in beef prices. Mullin mentioned that the White House has joined in the decision to bring the Justice Department into the matter, likening it to previous antitrust issues faced by meatpackers in 2019.
Trump’s remarks follow his earlier suggestion that the U.S. could look to import beef from Argentina to mitigate domestic prices, a proposal that has received backlash from American cattle ranchers. Rising food costs have been a concern across party lines, with past administrations stressing the need for increased competition and measures to curb price gouging in the meat industry.
