President Donald Trump is enhancing his transportation options both on the ground and in the air, as U.S. security agencies work towards modernizing the president's travel logistics and ensuring his safety.
At this week's World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Trump was spotted traveling in freshly delivered Cadillac SUVs. The U.S. Secret Service has confirmed that these vehicles have now officially become part of its protective fleet. While detailed specifications weren't disclosed, these SUVs appear to be heavily fortified Cadillac Escalades prepared for high-security missions.
Sean Curran, the Secret Service Director, expressed satisfaction in continuing the agency's longstanding collaboration with General Motors. He emphasized that the new vehicles are integral to the ongoing initiative to enhance protective measures for the president, ensuring reliability and security.
Presidents typically utilize armored SUVs for short-distance travel or when venturing outside the White House. Historically, Trump and previous presidents have often used armored Chevrolet Suburbans when the well-known presidential limousine, referred to as 'The Beast,' was unnecessary.
The shift to Cadillac SUVs was spurred by discussions between Trump and GM leadership. In March, Trump proposed the idea of incorporating Cadillac vehicles into the presidential motorcade during a meeting with GM Chief Executive Mary Barra. Subsequently, Secret Service officials inspected a GM facility in Michigan to explore future armored vehicle designs.
Concurrently, work continues on the latest model of the presidential limousine. In 2024, the Department of Homeland Security and the Secret Service awarded General Motors a significant contract to produce a new iteration of 'The Beast.' This project could potentially exceed $40 million by 2029, aiming for enhanced security and upgraded technologies.
In addition to ground upgrades, changes are also happening in the air. During his Davos visit, Trump briefly transitioned from a Boeing 747 to a smaller Boeing 757 due to a minor electrical issue. The U.S. Air Force has confirmed plans to provide Trump with a new aircraft by summer 2026.
Until the new planes arrive, Trump is using a luxury Boeing 747 formerly owned by the government of Qatar. This airplane, approximately 13 years old, features a premium interior and is undergoing modifications to comply with stringent U.S. security standards, costing potentially hundreds of millions of dollars.
The long-awaited replacement for the current Air Force One has experienced multiple delays. Boeing's delivery of two new Air Force One planes has now been postponed until at least mid-2028, causing frustration within both the Air Force and the White House.
Despite these setbacks, officials are committed to ensuring the president's safety and comfort on both land and in the air. The introduction of new Cadillac SUVs and advancements in aircraft upgrades indicate ongoing efforts to modernize presidential transportation for the future.
