President Donald Trump has revealed his intention to pardon Juan Orlando Hernández, the ex-president of Honduras, who faced serious drug trafficking charges in a US courtroom last year. Hernández, who occupied the position of Honduras’s president from 2014 until 2022, was extradited in April 2022 to confront charges related to a violent drug trafficking network purportedly responsible for smuggling vast quantities of cocaine into the US.
In a March 2024 ruling, a New York jury found Hernández guilty on counts related to cocaine importation and possession of firearms. Following a 45-year prison sentence, Trump took to social media to assert that Hernández had been "treated very harshly and unfairly," revealing his plans for a pardon.
This announcement arrives on the eve of Honduras’s general elections, slated for Sunday. Trump also voiced his support for Nasry "Tito" Asfura, the former mayor of Tegucigalpa and National Party member running for president. He praised Asfura for "standing up for democracy" and campaigning against Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro, whom Trump holds accountable for drug trafficking connections.
The election is highly contested, with polls indicating a close race among Asfura, Rixi Moncada of the ruling left-wing Libre Party, and Salvador Nasralla from the centrist Liberal Party. Trump openly criticized Moncada and characterized Nasralla as "a borderline Communist," warning that his candidacy might fragment votes between Asfura and Moncada. Nasralla has committed to severing relations with Venezuela if he wins.
Since 2022, President Xiomara Castro has governed Honduras, maintaining strong ties with Cuba and Venezuela while also collaborating with the US and upholding a long-standing extradition agreement. Her administration oversees a US military base that focuses on organized crime and drug trafficking eradication in the area.
In the interim, the Trump administration has justified its measures against Venezuela, including a series of strikes on vessels suspected of drug smuggling operations under "Operation Southern Spear," which are intended to dismantle narco-terrorism. Claims indicate that these operations have tallied over 80 casualties, though legal analysts have raised concerns regarding their legality due to insufficient proof of narcotic transportation.
Trump’s decision to pardon Hernández and support Asfura underscores the US’s sustained interest in the political dynamics of Central America, particularly in combating drug trafficking and directing electoral processes within the region.
