President Donald Trump has taken a firmer position on immigration, expressing his desire to “permanently halt migration” from impoverished nations and to review the legal status of millions of existing immigrants in the United States. He cited immigration as a factor contributing to problems such as crime and housing shortages, labeling it a component of a wider “social dysfunction” affecting the nation.
These strong comments come in the wake of a shooting involving two National Guard members who were patrolling Washington, D.C., under Trump’s crime-control agenda. One soldier succumbed to injuries, while the other is in critical condition.
In light of this incident, Trump announced intentions to deploy an additional 500 National Guard officers to the capital, but it is currently unknown which states will provide these reinforcements. Over 2,200 National Guard members from various states are already present in D.C.
Authorities report that 29-year-old Lakanwal opened fire on the Guard members shortly after turning a corner. Troops quickly subdued and arrested him. Officials believe he acted independently.
Lakanwal, who suffered non-life-threatening injuries, was a former member of a CIA-supported Afghan military unit before relocating to the U.S. in 2021 under Operation Allies Welcome, a program set up for Afghans following the American withdrawal from Afghanistan. His asylum application was initially filed during the Biden administration but approved while Trump was in office.
Investigators are currently reviewing warrants from multiple states to determine a motive, yet officials have remained tight-lipped about the potential reasons behind the attack.
The injured soldiers were Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, 20, and Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, 24, both from the West Virginia National Guard. They had been assigned to Washington since August as part of Trump’s law-enforcement initiative.
Beckstrom, a recent high-school graduate who volunteered for this duty, tragically passed away from her injuries, while Wolfe remains in critical condition.
West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey has ordered flags to fly at half-staff and has called for a statewide moment of silence in honor of both soldiers. He praised them as heroes dedicated to “serving our country and safeguarding the nation’s capital” during the attack.
Jeanine Pirro, the U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, confirmed that charges against Lakanwal have been elevated to first-degree murder following Beckstrom's passing. She noted that further charges may emerge as investigations proceed.
This attack has intensified Trump’s push for a review of the status of millions of legal immigrants and aims to lower the overall immigrant population. His administration has already been examining immigration cases for nearly a year, and this latest incident has galvanized those initiatives.
In a late-night update on social media, Trump suggested that many social issues facing the country are linked to foreign-born individuals, advocating for what he termed “reverse migration.”
