Former President Donald Trump’s legal scenario has taken a significant turn with the dismissal of the Georgia election interference case, marking the conclusion of all four criminal cases that posed serious threats to his political ambitions and freedom.
Georgia Charges Dismissed
The recently appointed prosecutor opted not to pursue the charges against Trump and several others who were alleged to have attempted to overturn the narrow loss to Joe Biden in Georgia following the 2020 election. Accusations included pressuring state officials, aiming to replace certified electors, and unauthorized access to election equipment.
The case languished after the prior prosecutor was removed due to conflicts of interest. Once the new prosecutor stepped in, he decided to completely dismiss the charges, resulting in the judge’s complete dismissal of the case.
Hush Money Conviction Remains
In May 2024, Trump made history as the first ex-US president to be convicted of felonies. A jury in New York found him guilty of falsifying business records tied to a hush-money payment made during the 2016 election cycle to silence an adult film actress claiming an affair.
While the conviction remains on his record, no jail time was issued. In January, the judge granted an unconditional discharge, taking into account Trump’s presidential responsibilities as he prepared for another term.
Trump is currently seeking to overturn this conviction, with a recent court ruling reopening discussions about moving the case to federal jurisdiction.
Federal Election Case Dropped
The federal case accusing Trump of attempting to overturn the 2020 election through false claims of voter fraud and undue pressure on officials was also dismissed after his victory in the 2024 election. Long-standing legal protocols prevent a sitting president from facing criminal charges.
Classified Documents Case Withdrawn
Charges regarding Trump’s retention of classified documents at his Florida estate and his efforts to resist government recovery attempts were also dropped after his return to the presidency.
Civil Lawsuits Pending
While criminal matters have concluded, Trump still faces ongoing civil litigation:
E. Jean Carroll Case
A jury found that Trump sexually assaulted writer E. Jean Carroll in the 1990s and subsequently defamed her, leading to an award of $88.3 million across two trials. Trump is appealing these decisions, with some aspects still under judicial review.
New York Fraud Case
New York’s attorney general has alleged Trump inflated property values to deceive lenders and insurers. A judge initially ordered a payment exceeding $350 million, though an appeals court later deemed this penalty excessive while affirming the occurrence of fraud. While the financial penalty was lifted, Trump faces other restrictions, including temporary bans for him and his sons from leadership roles. The state is appealing for the reinstatement of the higher penalty.
