During a rally in Pennsylvania, US President Donald Trump faced intense criticism after making offensive remarks regarding Somalia and Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, a Somali-born Muslim refugee. He described Somalia as “filthy, dirty, disgusting, ridden with crime,” questioning why the US receives fewer immigrants from nations like Norway, Sweden, and Denmark.
Trump referred to Omar as “garbage” and made false claims about her marriage to her brother, triggering chants of “Send her back!” from attendees. Omar, who arrived in the US as a child refugee and became a citizen in 2000, has consistently refuted these marriage allegations, labeling them as “absolutely false and ridiculous.”
These statements are consistent with Trump’s anti-immigration stance, as last month he suggested halting migration from all “Third World countries.” He also issued new guidelines that permit authorities to consider “negative, country-specific factors” when assessing applicants from 19 high-risk nations, including Somalia and Haiti.
These comments have reignited global criticism regarding Trump’s views on immigrants, especially from Africa, underlining his contentious approach to immigration and refugee policies in the US.
