Senegal's unexpected departure from the field in protest during the Africa Cup of Nations final against Morocco has sparked significant backlash from FIFA. Although Senegal claimed the title with a 1-0 victory, the conclusion of the match was overshadowed by turmoil and controversy.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino criticized the actions of Senegal's players and coaching staff, labeling their behavior as "unacceptable" for such a prestigious international final. He shared his views on Instagram, stating that the scenes witnessed during the match "must not be allowed to happen again."
The final took place in Rabat and grew increasingly tense during stoppage time of a scoreless match. Senegal thought they had scored a goal that would secure the championship, only for it to be disallowed due to a foul. Shortly after, a penalty was awarded to Morocco via a video review, as star player Brahim Diaz was allegedly fouled by a Senegal defender during a corner.
In protest, Senegal's coach Pape Thiaw led his team off the pitch to block the penalty attempt, resulting in a 15-minute stoppage in play. Tensions escalated as Senegalese supporters clashed with law enforcement in the stands.
Infantino stated, "Leaving the field is unacceptable, and we must not condone violence in football. Teams must compete fairly and respect match officials, else we risk undermining the spirit of the sport."
When the game resumed, Brahim Diaz's penalty kick was poorly executed and saved by Senegal's Edouard Mendy, in what has been dubbed one of the worst penalties in football. Diaz later expressed regrets to Moroccan supporters on social media.
As extra time commenced, Senegal clinched victory with a stunning goal from Pape Gueye in the last minute, earning their first AFCON title. Although Infantino congratulated Senegal, he reiterated that players and teams should model positive behavior for fans globally.
Morocco's football federation, under the leadership of key figure Fouzi Lekjaa, stated they would pursue legal recourse against Senegal with CAF and FIFA, arguing that the incident disrupted the match's normal flow and impacted player performance.
CAF has labeled the events as unacceptable and is reviewing all match footage to determine any disciplinary actions. Senegal's coach, Thiaw, faces potential severe consequences, though it's uncertain how it would affect future African competitions or FIFA World Cup eligibility.
Morocco's coach, Walid Regragui, denounced the incident as "shameful," arguing it tarnished the reputation of African football on the world stage.
