Gardaí in Drogheda, County Louth, have detained two men in their 20s after a fire at premises housing people applying for international protection late last Friday. Authorities say the blaze appears to have been deliberately set and endangered occupants, including children.
An immediate Garda investigation into the suspected attempted arson was launched. Emergency crews evacuated five people from the building's top floor — four of them children — and several residents were taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital for assessment following the incident.
Police investigators have indicated the fire was started intentionally by unknown individuals. One man was arrested on Wednesday night and a second on Thursday morning; both are suspected of offences under the Criminal Damage Act 1991. Enquiries remain ongoing to establish the full circumstances.
A Garda spokesperson described the act as "extremely dangerous" and said it placed vulnerable residents, notably children, at significant risk. The spokesperson also commended the rapid response by emergency services that ensured all residents were evacuated safely.
The case has prompted concern about the security of accommodation for those seeking international protection, and Gardaí have asked anyone with information to come forward to assist the investigation.
The local community in Drogheda has welcomed the fact that those evacuated did not suffer serious injuries and awaits further updates as inquiries continue.
