Typhoon Kalmaegi has brought catastrophic destruction to the Philippines and Vietnam, resulting in the loss of more than 190 lives and leaving many individuals unaccounted for as the storm progresses towards Cambodia and Laos. This powerful tropical cyclone has unleashed relentless winds, heavy rainfall, and severe flooding, marking it as one of the most devastating storms of the year.
In the Philippines, at least 188 fatalities have been reported, with another 135 people missing after fierce flash floods and landslides engulfed communities in mud and rubble. Waters surged through urban areas, obliterating homes, vehicles, and even shipping containers. Central regions, especially Cebu and Talisay City, have been among the most severely impacted, with eyewitnesses describing utter devastation.
Survivors who escaped to higher ground watched despairingly as floodwaters swept away everything they owned. In Talisay City, Mely Saberon, a survivor, expressed her sorrow, stating, “We don’t have a home anymore. We couldn’t save anything. This typhoon has been unlike any we’ve faced before.”
In response to the crisis, the Philippine government has declared a nationwide state of calamity, mobilizing rescue teams and distributing emergency supplies to the affected areas. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr has also announced a state of emergency as another typhoon is reportedly developing in the Pacific.
As the storm hit Vietnam late Thursday with winds soaring to 149 km/h (92 mph), it has resulted in five fatalities, numerous injuries, and significant displacement. Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh convened an online meeting to steer emergency operations, urging rescuers to reach those cut off. “We must ensure that everyone has access to food, water, and vital supplies. Nobody should be left without basic necessities,” he emphasized.
The storm's impact on Vietnam’s central coast was especially harsh, with uprooted trees, torn roofs, and shattered windows caused by the strong winds. In Dak Lak province, residents pleaded for assistance as heavy rainfall and flooding caused their houses to collapse. Many sought shelter in schools and public buildings, while over 260,000 military personnel were tasked to assist with relief efforts.
Authorities have expressed concerns about further flooding in low-lying districts, as central Vietnam had already experienced unprecedented rainfall that resulted in 50 deaths before Kalmaegi’s arrival. Airports and expressways were closed, and precautionary evacuations affected hundreds of thousands.
Kalmaegi, referred to as Tino in Vietnam, unleashed the equivalent of an entire month’s rainfall in 24 hours, aggravating the already dire situation. Roads were blocked by fallen debris in towns like Quy Nhon and Gia Lai, and widespread power outages plunged communities into darkness.
As the typhoon continues its course towards Cambodia and Laos, authorities in the region are on high alert, bracing for potential flooding and landslides. While rescue and cleanup efforts are ongoing, numerous areas remain cut off from communication, making it difficult to assess the full extent of the disaster.
With widespread destruction of homes, infrastructure failure, and family displacements, Southeast Asia now confronts a daunting task of rebuilding and restoring normalcy following one of the most lethal storms in recent times.
