The General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) has made a significant advancement in the introduction of electric air taxis in the United Arab Emirates by rolling out the Archer Midnight eVTOL aircraft for limited commercial operations.
Archer Aviation has officially become the first manufacturer of eVTOLs to gain admission into the GCAA’s Restricted Type Certificate programme. With this approval, the company can conduct limited flights while adhering to rigorous safety and regulatory protocols for long-term utilization in the UAE.
This advancement follows years of collaboration between the GCAA and Archer Aviation, which included numerous technical inspections of the company’s facilities in the U.S. and in-country test flights of the Midnight aircraft within the UAE.
As part of the certification process, the GCAA has also begun granting vital approvals such as Design Organization Approval and Production Organization Approval, reflecting strong confidence in Archer Aviation’s engineering practices, safety measures, and manufacturing standards.
Aqeel Al Zarooni, Assistant Director-General for Aviation Safety Affairs at GCAA, reiterated the authority's commitment to the safe incorporation of innovative aviation technologies into UAE airspace.
The initiative spans eight crucial workstreams that include aircraft certification, operational protocols, maintenance, flight crew training, airspace planning, vertiport development, security, and regulatory supervision.
The Midnight eVTOL aims to commence operations in Abu Dhabi in collaboration with the local operator Abu Dhabi Aviation. The aircraft is designed to enhance short-distance urban mobility and significantly decrease travel times across the region.
This milestone is a noteworthy advancement towards the UAE's ambition of establishing itself as a global center for advanced air mobility and next-generation aviation technology.
