The Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC) announced that astronaut Mohammad AlMulla successfully completed the two-week CAVES training programme organised by the European Space Agency (ESA) in Italy. The programme took place across Molise and Campania regions and included astronauts from ESA, JAXA, and NASA, reflecting the collaborative nature of modern space exploration.
Purpose of CAVES Training
CAVES, which stands for Cooperative Adventure for Valuing and Exercising human behaviour and performance Skills, is designed to prepare astronauts for the challenges of working in isolated and extreme environments, similar to space missions. The training emphasises teamwork, safety, and operational efficiency under demanding conditions, mirroring those faced during actual space expeditions.
Training Activities and Environment
During the programme, AlMulla participated in technical lectures, outdoor exercises, and a multi-day underground expedition. Astronauts lived and worked in complete isolation, facing confined spaces, limited privacy, minimal equipment, and technical challenges. These conditions replicate aspects of spaceflight, including the lack of natural day-night cycles and the constant presence of operational risks.
Skills and Knowledge Gained
Throughout the CAVES training, participants developed expertise in subterranean exploration, scientific research, and mapping techniques. AlMulla and his peers also honed essential soft skills, such as communication, leadership, stress management, and decision-making. These abilities are critical for successful long-duration missions and enhance overall team performance in high-pressure environments.
Implications for Future Space Missions
Completing the ESA CAVES programme equips AlMulla with experience that will support his involvement in upcoming space missions. The training strengthens international collaboration between space agencies and helps astronauts adapt to unfamiliar and challenging conditions. This preparation is key to achieving mission objectives safely and efficiently while maintaining mental and physical resilience.
International Cooperation and UAE’s Space Goals
AlMulla’s participation highlights the UAE’s commitment to advancing its space programme and fostering global partnerships. By collaborating with international space agencies, the UAE continues to develop its astronauts’ capabilities, contributing to broader scientific research, exploration, and innovation in space.
The successful completion of the ESA CAVES programme marks an important milestone in Mohammad AlMulla’s astronaut career. The skills and experiences gained will not only support UAE-led space missions but also strengthen cooperation with international partners, reinforcing the nation’s growing presence in the global space community.
