UAE and India Strengthen Bilateral Ties at Joint Consular Meeting

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

The United Arab Emirates and the Republic of India recently held the sixth session of their joint Consular Committee at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs headquarters in Abu Dhabi. The meeting focused on ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation and improve services for citizens of both countries.

The UAE delegation was led by Omar Obaid Alhesan Alshamsi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, while the Indian delegation was headed by Arun Kumar Chatterjee, Secretary of Consular, Passport, Visa, and Overseas Indian Affairs. Both delegations discussed opportunities to enhance cooperation in areas of mutual interest and share best practices in consular services.

Alshamsi welcomed the Indian delegation and extended greetings from H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs. He highlighted that convening the sixth session reflects the commitment of both countries’ leadership to strengthen their relations. He also emphasised the deep historical, cultural, and strategic ties that bind the UAE and India, which help advance shared interests and meet the expectations of their citizens.

The discussions covered several key areas, including improving consular cooperation, exchanging expertise, and exploring new ways to enhance the quality of services provided to citizens. Both sides agreed that sharing knowledge and experiences in consular work can lead to better service delivery and more efficient handling of consular affairs.

On the sidelines of the meeting, the Indian delegation visited the UAE’s Smart Mission model, a first-of-its-kind initiative globally. This model uses an integrated system of advanced technologies and artificial intelligence to provide innovative consular services. It reflects the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ commitment to modernising consular operations, simplifying procedures, and enhancing the customer experience for citizens across UAE missions worldwide.

The Smart Mission model showcases the UAE’s forward-thinking approach in using technology to deliver faster, more transparent, and efficient consular services. It combines digital systems, artificial intelligence, and streamlined processes to ensure citizens have access to high-quality services, whether applying for visas, passports, or other consular assistance.

Both delegations also discussed the potential for further collaboration on technology-driven solutions in consular services. By sharing insights and exploring new tools, the UAE and India aim to make consular operations more effective, user-friendly, and responsive to the needs of citizens.

The sixth joint session of the UAE-India Consular Committee not only reinforced the strong relationship between the two nations but also highlighted their commitment to modernising consular services and using innovation to improve service quality. The meeting reflects the ongoing efforts of both countries to foster stronger diplomatic ties while focusing on tangible benefits for citizens.

Through this collaboration, the UAE and India continue to demonstrate how diplomacy, technology, and cooperation can come together to improve governance and enhance public services, ensuring that citizens receive efficient and high-quality consular support.
