The UAE is working hard to stop plastic pollution both inside the country and around the world. On World Environment Day, which is celebrated every year on June 5th, Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, the Minister of Climate Change and Environment, spoke about the UAE’s strong commitment to protecting the environment. She said the country follows the vision of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who believed a healthy environment is very important for a happy and strong society.
This year, World Environment Day focuses on fighting plastic pollution and asks everyone to work together. The UAE is taking big steps to manage plastic use better. Starting from January 1, 2026, there will be a ban on importing, making, and selling single-use plastics. This follows an earlier step in 2024 when plastic bags were banned.
Dr. Al Dahak explained that the UAE’s Circular Economy Policy plays a big role in these changes. This policy helps use resources wisely in areas like green building and transportation. It focuses on cutting down plastic waste, promoting recycling, and encouraging better packaging choices. It also deals with managing dangerous waste safely.
She also reminded everyone that each person has a part to play. “We can all help by using less plastic in our daily lives,” she said. “Together, we can create a strong movement for healthier communities and a cleaner environment.”
One important project is the Clean Rivers initiative by Erth Zayed Philanthropies. It helps communities clean up rivers and keep them free from plastic pollution. This fits with the UAE’s worldwide efforts to reduce plastic waste with smart ideas.
Dr. Al Dahak ended with a message about protecting the nature that supports all life. This year’s theme is “Beat Plastic Pollution.” She said, “By working together, we can create a brighter and greener future for everyone.” The UAE wants to protect its land and sea so future generations can enjoy a healthy environment.
The country is serious about protecting nature by taking strong actions against pollution and waste. With help from the community and smart policies, the UAE aims for a future where nature can grow and thrive everywhere.
