In April 2025, Japan bought most of its crude oil from the United Arab Emirates (UAE). According to official data from Japan, the UAE supplied Tokyo with 34 million barrels of crude oil that month.
This amount made up 45.5 percent of all the crude oil Japan imported in April, based on numbers shared by the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy, which is part of Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry.
Overall, Japan imported 74.77 million barrels of crude oil in April. Most of this oil came from Arab countries, which supplied 94.1 percent, or 70.40 million barrels. These countries included the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, and Sudan.
Saudi Arabia was the second biggest supplier after the UAE. It sent 27.10 million barrels of crude oil, which was 36.3 percent of Japan’s total oil imports. Qatar supplied 5.25 million barrels, making up 7 percent of the total. Kuwait followed with 2.79 million barrels, or 3.7 percent. Oman provided 1.2 percent of the oil, and Sudan supplied 0.4 percent.
The rest of Japan’s oil imports came from other countries. The United States supplied 3.9 percent, Ecuador gave 1.4 percent, Brunei sent 0.2 percent, and Oceania countries provided 0.1 percent.
In short, the UAE was Japan’s top source for crude oil in April 2025, followed by Saudi Arabia, with most of Japan’s oil coming from the Arab region.
