The United Arab Emirates has shown support for Nigeria after severe flooding hit the town of Mokwa in Niger State, northern Nigeria. The floods killed at least 151 people and left thousands homeless.
In an official message, the UAE's Ministry of Foreign Affairs sent heartfelt condolences to the families of those who died and to the government and people of Nigeria.
Heavy rains on Wednesday night caused the flash floods, which destroyed over 250 buildings and washed away two bridges. Many victims were found nearly 10 kilometres away from the town.
Ibrahim Audu Husseini, a spokesperson from the Niger State Emergency Management Agency, warned that the number of deaths might rise, as some bodies were swept away by the powerful Niger River.
The Red Cross said rescue teams are searching areas as far as Jebba, across the river’s swampy banks. More than 3,000 people have been forced to leave their homes due to the disaster.
Photos show people trying to recover what they can from the wreckage and flooded areas.
