UAE Launches First AI-Powered Digital Pollen Atlas Platform

UAE Launches First AI-Powered Digital Pollen Atlas Platform

Post by : Bianca Haleem

The Fujairah Environment Authority (FEA), in partnership with the Fujairah Research Centre (FRC), has officially launched the UAE’s first digital Pollen Atlas platform. The platform was unveiled during a special event held at the Philosophy House in Fujairah, attended by scientists, researchers, and experts from leading universities and research institutions across the UAE.

The Digital Pollen Atlas is the country’s first unified and scientifically validated reference system for environmental and pollen-related data. It has been developed to strengthen environmental monitoring, scientific research, biodiversity conservation, and public health studies across the UAE.

The platform combines a national pollen database, geographic information systems (GIS), airborne pollen records, and real-time air quality indicators into a single digital ecosystem. This integrated approach allows researchers and environmental authorities to better understand how pollen, weather conditions, and air quality interact across different regions of the country.

One of the platform’s key features is the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning technologies for automated pollen classification. AI models have been trained using expert-verified images and local field data, enabling accurate identification of pollen types while adapting to the UAE’s unique environmental conditions.

The platform also uses advanced GIS mapping to track pollen and plant distribution across the UAE’s diverse landscapes, including coastal areas, mountain regions, and urban centres. By combining pollen concentration levels with seasonal climate data, dust events, and particulate matter measurements, the system can help create seasonal pollen calendars and support future allergy-risk and environmental health alerts.

As part of the project, researchers developed a specialised airborne pollen trap designed specifically for the UAE’s harsh climate. The device is capable of operating in extreme heat, humidity, and dusty conditions while providing reliable pollen sampling in both urban and remote locations. The collected information feeds directly into the platform’s microscopy library and AI-ready datasets, reducing reliance on foreign scientific references and creating a strong local knowledge base.

The Digital Pollen Atlas is expected to support research on respiratory diseases, asthma triggers, environmental health, climate-related ecological changes, and biodiversity conservation. It will also provide valuable scientific data to policymakers, public health authorities, and environmental experts for better planning and decision-making.

Aseela Abdullah Al Moalla, Director of the Fujairah Environment Authority, said the launch reflects the UAE leadership’s vision of promoting environmental sustainability and strengthening food security. She described the project as a strategic step toward enhancing the country’s digital environmental infrastructure and supporting biodiversity conservation, scientific research, and environmental planning. She added that the initiative aligns with Fujairah Strategy 2028 and the UAE National Food Security Strategy 2051.

Dr. Fouad Lamghari Ridouane, Director of the Fujairah Research Centre, described the platform as a major scientific achievement. He said it provides an advanced AI-ready framework designed specifically for the UAE’s unique ecological conditions and highlighted the importance of collaboration between government entities, research centres, and academic institutions in successfully delivering the project.
