UN Issues Dire Warning on Risks to Barakah Nuclear Facility

Post by : Bianca Haleem

The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, has raised alarms regarding the Barakah nuclear power plant in the United Arab Emirates, stating that a targeted attack could lead to severe radioactive leaks affecting the region.

During an urgent session of the UN Security Council, Grossi referred to the drone strike near the nuclear site as a critical concern, emphasizing the potential dangers posed by the facility that holds significant quantities of nuclear material.

He pointed out that the Barakah plant, situated approximately 300 kilometers from Abu Dhabi city, is currently operational and contains both fresh and spent nuclear fuel, dramatically increasing the risk of a radiological incident.

Grossi warned that a deliberate strike could unleash a substantial radiation release, alerting that the implications of such an event would be grave for the Middle Eastern region.

He elaborated on the possible ramifications, stating that damage to external power supply lines could endanger safety protocols and the integrity of the reactor core.

In the aftermath of a recent drone strike that ignited a fire near the Barakah site, necessitating immediate safety precautions such as evacuations and supplying iodine tablets to locals, Grossi's warnings resonate deeply.

Regional instability has intensified recently, particularly following strikes involving American and Israeli forces against Iranian targets, leading to retaliatory actions from Iran impacting US allies, including the UAE. The ongoing tensions raise the stakes for security in the area.

Although a ceasefire was brokered on April 8 with Pakistan’s intervention, lasting peace remains elusive, as talks in Islamabad did not yield a comprehensive resolution. Concurrently, US President Donald Trump announced an unending extension of the truce.
