Team India has addressed the much-discussed inclusion of Ayush Badoni in the One Day International squad facing New Zealand. The talented cricketer from Delhi joins the team following Washington Sundar's unfortunate injury. While his selection raised eyebrows among fans and experts alike, the team management has clarified their rationale.
Opinions on Badoni’s selection have been mixed. Some former players and supporters advocated for alternatives like Riyan Parag or Rinku Singh. The conversation intensified as the series unfolded, with questions regarding Badoni’s readiness for international competition.
In response to these concerns, India’s batting coach Sitanshu Kotak provided insights during a recent press conference. He emphasized that Badoni has secured his selection through consistent performances in domestic cricket, India A games, and during the Indian Premier League. The necessity for a player capable of both batting and bowling was highlighted, particularly given Sundar's absence.
Kotak noted that relying solely on five bowlers in an ODI can be risky. Unexpected injuries can leave teams short-handed in terms of bowling options. He mentioned that a sixth bowling option is crucial, and Badoni’s ability to deliver useful off-spin when called upon makes him an appropriate fit in the current lineup.
Furthermore, Kotak praised Badoni’s reliability under pressure, having consistently delivered solid performances in India A matches. His IPL experience has also contributed to his growth as a white-ball player.
Statistical evidence further reinforces the team’s confidence in Badoni. In 27 List A games, he has amassed 693 runs with an average exceeding 36 and a strike rate upward of 93. His achievements include one century and five half-centuries, alongside 18 wickets, all while maintaining commendable control and economy.
During tours to face South Africa A and Australia A, Badoni demonstrated his all-round prowess, scoring a crucial half-century against South Africa A and taking vital wickets against Australia A, bolstering his case as a valuable team member.
In the IPL, Badoni has played 56 matches with Lucknow Super Giants, scoring 963 runs and exhibiting a robust strike rate, showcasing his ability to thrive in high-pressure scenarios.
Despite a range of opinions on his selection, Team India states that their choice reflects a commitment to balance rather than popularity. The management holds faith in Badoni’s skills, seeing potential in his multipurpose contributions. This opportunity represents a significant moment for Badoni to establish himself at the elite level and address any doubts concerning his selection.
