Navigating Travelator Etiquette to Enhance Airport Experience

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

Airports often resemble bustling arenas, filled with passengers eager to catch flights, traverse terminals, or queue in long lines. One essential feature aiding quick navigation is the travelator, a moving walkway designed to facilitate faster movement. However, improper usage by many travelers leads to overcrowding and unnecessary delays.

The primary function of a travelator is to serve as a swift path for walking, not a resting spot. When individuals choose to stand still on the moving walkway, especially when side-by-side, they inadvertently obstruct others, making it hard for those in a hurry to reach their destinations timely.

A straightforward guideline to promote efficient travel is: Stand on the right, walk on the left. Passengers wanting a moment to catch their breath should position themselves on the right, freeing the left side for those rushing to their gates. This universally acknowledged rule helps keep the walkway orderly.

Sadly, this guideline is often disregarded, with travelers forming groups or placing bags centrally, impeding momentum and leading to frustration. Airports are inherently crowded, and such conduct only exacerbates the tension.

Grasping the essence of travelator courtesy is straightforward; if you're fatigued or carrying heavy bags, opt to stand on the right. Those in a hurry should utilize the left side to walk briskly. This mutual consideration ensures everyone can navigate effectively.

Awareness is key. Avoid halting suddenly on travelators, and refrain from using them as spots to check your phone or rummage through your bag, preventing potential accidents for those behind you.

Simple awareness can significantly enhance everyone's travel experience. By adhering to this basic rule, travel flows smoothly, creating a more serene airport atmosphere where all can navigate effortlessly, especially those who may be anxious or pressed for time.

Next time you find yourself at an airport, keep this helpful rule in mind: Stand right, walk left. It's a cornerstone of courteous travel.
