In a new twist in the ongoing legal struggle over the estate of the deceased industrialist Sunjay Kapur, a notable claim emerged in the Delhi High Court as his daughter, Samaira Kapur, alleged that her university fees had not been settled for two months. This assertion was promptly contested by her stepmother, Priya Kapur, intensifying the already intricate legal situation.
The court convened to review an interim injunction request by Samaira and her brother, Kiaan, who are seeking to restrict Priya Kapur from managing or disposing of Sunjay Kapur’s assets until the legitimacy of his will is established. Senior Advocate Mahesh Jethmalani, representing the children, emphasized that Samaira, currently studying in the U.S., had been waiting on payments for two months. He argued that, under the matrimonial agreement, Priya was responsible for timely covering all expenses, particularly educational and living costs.
Responding to the claims, Senior Advocate Rajiv Nayar, defending Priya Kapur, refuted the allegations, asserting that all expenses related to Karisma’s children had been duly addressed. He contended that there were no outstanding dues and categorized the unpaid fee claims as erroneous.
This exchange led Justice Jyoti Singh to issue a warning to both parties, stressing the importance of keeping emotional disputes out of the courtroom setting. The judge instructed Senior Advocate Shyel Trehan, also representing Priya, to handle routine matters privately rather than drawing them into court discussions. A further hearing is slated for 19 November.
The legal wrangling over Sunjay Kapur’s estate emerged following his death on 12 June, believed to be due to a heart attack while playing polo in London. Samaira and Kiaan have since filed a lawsuit accusing Priya Kapur of misrepresenting Sunjay’s will. They allege that Sunjay had assured them of their rightful share of the estate, which they claim is not reflected in the final will.
Both parties have exchanged serious allegations, complicating this legal conflict, which raises profound questions around inheritance rights, asset management, and the will’s validity. As the case unfolds, the High Court is poised to examine further evidence and arguments to establish a clearer path for estate distribution.
