Upasana Kamineni Addresses Controversy Over Egg-Freezing Comments

Post by : Meena Hassan

Following criticism for her remarks about egg freezing during an event at IIT Hyderabad, Upasana Kamineni Konidela has clarified her intentions. She emphasized that her goal was to foster a constructive dialogue regarding women's reproductive choices rather than incite debate.

Amidst the online discussions, Upasana took to X to express her appreciation for the varied opinions shared. “I’m grateful for the healthy dialogue generated and thank you for your respectful engagements,” she stated on Wednesday evening.

She mentioned her desire to further explore the “pleasures and pressures of privilege,” while inviting individuals to reflect on the facts she presented. Additionally, she urged employers to enhance women's participation in various sectors.

Upasana also shared a personal “fact check,” detailing her own decisions regarding marriage and motherhood. She pointed out that she married for love at the age of 27, opted to freeze her eggs at 29 for personal and health reasons, welcomed her first child at 36, and is now anticipating twins at 39. She stressed that both her marriage and career hold equal importance, and her journey is guided by personal choices.

During her talk at IIT Hyderabad, Upasana referred to egg freezing as a form of “insurance” for women, empowering them to make independent choices regarding marriage and motherhood. She noted that a larger number of men than women in attendance expressed interest in marriage, highlighting a shift in perspectives within “Progressive India.”

Responses to her comments have varied. Some medical professionals and career-oriented women applauded her focus on autonomy, while critics pointed out the financial barriers many women in India face concerning egg freezing.

Upasana has committed to participating in the ongoing conversation, portraying egg freezing as just one of multiple options available to women as they navigate the intersections of biological, professional, and social demands.
